ADS is a key component of the Selective Adoption maintenance process and can also be used between different PeopleSoft applications that share similar data structures. We will use this ADS to migrate dashboards, page and field configurator, drop zones, and much from one environment to another.

The three main components of ADS are:

Application Data Set Definitions – These define classes of Application Data Sets and are created and maintained in the Data Set Designer. Data sets are used to logically group related data, simplifying the process of managing and migrating changes.

ADS Projects – These projects store and convey data based on Application Data Set definitions.

Data Migration Workbench (DMW) – The Data Migration Workbench provides an interactive interface for performing ADS operations such as compare and copy, reviewing reports, overriding merge/copy actions, and managing approvals. It also allows users to create new ADS projects.

Enhancements in Application Data Sets (ADS) – Latest Release

Application Data Sets (ADS) have undergone significant enhancements in this latest release, providing improved security and usability for PeopleSoft users. This update focuses on three key improvements:

Setting ADS Project File permissions for UNIX users

Moving the ADS Project encryption option

Encrypting Data Set Project Files

Setting ADS Project File Permissions for UNIX Users

PeopleSoft now offers an option to control file permissions for ADS project files in UNIX environments. Administrators can choose whether to grant read and write permissions to other UNIX users, ensuring better control over access and security. This enhancement allows organizations to manage file-sharing settings according to their security policies and operational needs.

Moving the ADS Project Encryption Option

In this release, the ADS encryption setting has been moved from the PeopleTools Options page to a newly introduced ADS Options page. This change simplifies configuration management and provides a dedicated space for ADS-related settings.

To access the new ADS Options page, navigate through:

PeopleTools → Lifecycle Tools → Migrate Data → ADS Options

Fig 1.1 ADS Data encryption

Encrypting Data Set Project Files

Data set project files are stored in project file repositories and should be encrypted for added security. By default, the option to encrypt data set project files is selected.

ADS projects delivered through PUM (PeopleSoft Update Manager) are PeopleSoft-delivered projects, which are public and therefore not encrypted. Encryption only applies to user-created ADS projects.

To handle ADS project encryption, access the ADS Options page:

PeopleTools → Lifecycle Tools → Migrate Data → ADS Options

Key Benefits of These Enhancements

Improved Security: More control over UNIX file permissions enhances data security.

Simplified Configuration: The relocation of encryption settings to the ADS Options page streamlines administration.

Better User Experience: Clearer access to ADS settings improves usability for administrators.

With these updates, PeopleSoft continues to enhance its platform’s flexibility, security, and ease of use. Stay tuned for more enhancements in future releases.

Author: Jayaraj Rajendrian, Peoplesoft Consultant

In PeopleTools 8.61, there are many new features.
